
Small Ensembles: Dr. Jeff Barudin
Dr. Jeffrey Barudin is a freelance percussionist and educator based in St. Louis. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Music and the Director of Percussion Studies at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO. Dr. Barudin is also the Director of Bands on the Lindenwood University-Belleville campus, where he directs the Fighting Lynx Pep Band. In addition, he is a percussion faculty member at the New England Music Camp in Sidney, Maine.
Dr. Barudin has performed as a soloist and ensemble member throughout the United States. He is currently the Principal Percussionist and Timpanist with the St. Louis Civic Orchestra and the Town & Country Symphony Orchestra, and is a percussion section member of the St. Louis Brass Band. He has also performed with the St. Louis Civic Orchestra, the Lansing (MI) Symphony, the Altoona (PA) Symphony, the Arbor Opera Theater and the Bloomfield (NJ) Symphony. As a member of the Drop Circle Percussion Trio, he performed at the Richard Rodgers Theater on Broadway. He also played with Roland Vazquez’s Latin-Jazz Ensemble, performing throughout the Midwest and at PASIC 2003 in Louisville.
During his graduate studies at the University of Michigan, Dr. Barudin participated in numerous recordings. As a member of the Percussion Ensemble, he can be heard on three CD’s, including the noted “Historic Works for Percussion Ensemble (1931-1942)”, directed by Dr. Thomas Siwe. He also recorded William Bolcom’s “Songs of Innocence and Experience”, conducted by Maestro Leonard Slatkin with the University Symphony Orchestra. This CD won 4 Grammys that year, including “Best Classical Recording.” While at UM Jeff collaborated closely with composer Michael Daugherty for his piece "Raise the Roof" written for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra featuring principal timpanist Brian Jones. He also worked with composer Bright Sheng demonstrating marimba techniques to be used in his marimba concerto "Colors of Crimson" dedicated to Evelyn Glennie.
Dr. Barudin has been fortunate to study with many noted percussion pedagogues and performers. His primary instructors are Dan Armstrong, Joseph Gramley and Michael Udow. He holds graduate degrees in Performance & Literature from the University of Illinois (Edgard Varese Percussion Award Distinction), and has studied with such artist-teachers as Fred D. Hinger, Frank Shaffer, Tom Siwe, and Paul Yancich. His orchestral performance experiences include Principal Timpanist with the Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra, Asheville Symphony Orchestra, Brevard Music Festival, as well as Percussionist/ Assistant timpanist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Memphis Opera, Chicago City Ballet, and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. Michael also served as percussion coordinator and arranger for the Memphis Blues Drum and Bugle Corps, as well as an instructor/arranger for the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, and the University of Illinois Indoor Drumline. He has given solo performances and educational presentations at venues throughout the U.S. and Europe, including featured soloist/clinician at the Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic, National Conference On Percussion Pedagogy, as well as numerous State MEA/CBDNA conventions, universities, and conservatories. His recent research sabbatical brought him to Trinidad and Tobago, where he performed with the Woodbrook Invaders at the 2011 Panorama Competition, as well as presented clinics at the University of the West Indies. He currently serves the Percussive Arts Society as Chair of the New Music/Research Committee, and has served as Chapter President in both South Carolina and Mississippi. Associate Professor Scott Cameron has been Director of Percussion Studies at Missouri State since 1985. His duties at Missouri State include private instruction in all areas of percussion, conducting the Percussion Ensemble and the Island Breeze Steel Band and teaching a percussion methods course. Dr. Cameron is the principal percussionist with the Springfield Symphony and former timpanist of the Springfield Regional Opera. He is a member of MENC and the Percussion Arts Society, and is an active performer, adjudicator, and clinician. Dr. Cameron has also taught percussion at Evangel University in Springfield and was the percussion instructor at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces prior to his position at Missouri State.

She received her D.M.A. degree from the University of Oklahoma, her Master’s degree as well as a Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, and her Bachelor’s degree from the Lawrence Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin. She has performed in the percussion sections of the Missouri Chamber Orchestra, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fox Valley Symphony, and the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra. She also has a history in drum corps culminating as a member of the 1989 Santa Clara Vanguard front ensemble.
As a performer, Dr. Gaines has been a soloist throughout the United States and in several countries including Brazil, China, England, and Russia. As a pedagogue, she has sold books in even more countries. Her first pedagogical book, Sequential Studies for Four-Mallet Marimba – Level 1 has become quite popular throughout the US and abroad as the only beginning four-mallet marimba book of its kind. She’s currently working on Level 2.

She has been the Vice-President and President of the Missouri Chapter of PAS and hosted the MOPAS Day Of Percussion in 2003 and 2012. Near the end of that term, she became an Associate Editor for Percussive Notes, the scholarly journal of PAS, with the primary responsibility of Review Editor and served in that role until the summer of 2014.

He has served as a member, staff member, and eventually Percussion Caption Head of The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, teaching the corps from 2002 to 2005 and earning two DCI World Championships in the process. Jim has also served on the instructional staff for the Blue Knights from Denver, Colorado, as the Program Coordinator/Percussion Caption head of the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps, and as an instructor for the Phantom Regiment, where he worked with the indoor percussion program from 1996-1998.
Jim is currently the percussion consultant/arranger for ISSMA State Finalist Bloomington North marching band. Jim's latest accomplishments include titles with New Palestine High School including 2001 and 2003 IPA State Champion and 2002 WGI world champion.

Matt Henry has a deep-rooted love all things percussive with a particular interest in the drumming of Africa and Latin America. During his years of performing throughout the United States, Mr. Henry has been influenced by many drumming masters; among them Max Roach, Jeff Hamilton, Madou Dembale, Mamady Keita, and the drummers of Les Ballet African. Eventually he plans to travel overseas to Cuba and West Africa in order to enhance his knowledge of the culture and music of the people who live there.
Since his arrival to St. Louis in 1996, Mr. Henry has conducted a number of clinics on African and Latin percussion concepts at area schools and Universities as well as presenting at the International Association of Jazz Educators Convention in New Orleans. All the recordings are comprised of Burritt's original compositions as well as works written expressly for him. He has been a featured artist at seven Percussive Arts Society International Conventions. In 1992 he presented his New York solo debut in Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall and in 1998 performed his London debut in the Purcell Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Mr Burritt has extensive chamber and orchestral experience and has performed with the Chicago Chamber Musicians, The Chicago Symphony, The Rembrandt Players, and the The Penninsula Music Festival Orchestra.
Mr. Burritt is also active as a composer, with two concertos to his credit, numerous solo and chamber works for marimba and percussion as well as two books of etudes. His works for solo marimba have become standard repertoire for the instrument and are frequently required repertoire on international competitions. He has been commissioned by The World Marimba Competition in Stuttgart Germany, The Paris International Marimba Competition, Third Coast Percussion Quartet, Exit 9 Percussion, Louisiana State University, The Northshore Concert Band and the Tempus Fugit Percussion Ensemble. Mr. Burritt is published with Ludwig Music, C. Allen and Keyboard Percussion Publications. Burritt is also an artist/clinician and product design/consultant for Malletech, where he has developed his own line of signature marimba mallets and an artist / educational clinician with the Zildjian Company. Mr. Burritt is a member of the Percussive Arts Society Board of Directors, a contributing editor for Percussive Notes Magazine and the chairman of the PAS Keyboard Committee.
Michael Burritt is currently Professor of Percussion and head of the department at The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Prior to his appointment at Eastman Mr. Burritt was Professor of Percussion at Northwestern University from 1995-2008 where he developed a program of international distinction. Mr. Burritt received his Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees, as well as the prestigious Performers Certificate from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. His teachers have included John Beck, Gordon Stout, Paul Yancich and Herbert Flower.
